This race takes place at the beginning of October and is run over 6 furlongs. It is open to horses sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the previous year but limited to those lots catalogued in Books 3 & 4 which is inevitably the cheaper end of the market, with weight allowances of up to 6lbs for those horses purchased for less than 15k guineas.
Last year's renewal was won by the David Barron trained Poet's Prize (7/1) from the Richard Hannon trained Receding Waves, a son of FSS Dick Turpin who was sent off the 4/1 2nd fav, and the Dean Ivory trained 2/1fav Twin Sails. The 2nd & 3rd were the 2 highest rated horses coming into the race with ORs of 94 & 99 respectively & the 1st 5 home were both the front 5 in the market & the most favourably treated at the weights.
Richard Hannon, who trained 3 of the final field of 26 was also responsible for the 4th placed horse Skeaping (16/1) as well as Boycie (40/1) who finished 14th, one place ahead of the other representative of a FSS in the field, Vroom (50/1) by Poet's Voice, who along with the Brian Meehan trained The Lillster (33/1) were both the 2 most expensive horses in the field, at £47.25k & £44.1k respectively, as well as the only 2 horses making their debuts in the race.

Neither David Barron nor Richard Hannon have any entries in this year's race that are by FSS but Dean Ivory has a daughter of Harbour Watch entered named Seaview, who in a pleasing piece of symmetry is a 1/2 sister to last year's 2nd Receding Waves. Purchased for the exact same amount as her 1/2 brother was, she is also featured in @DanBriden's list of Two-Year-Olds To Follow & will be my ante-post selection for this race.
The most expensive purchase amongst the entries representing FSS is a Saeed Manana owned £52.5k Famous Name colt in training with Ismail Mohammed, but as a May foal who also has a 2017 Derby entry he doesn't make much appeal for this race. The same owner is responsible for the 3rd most expensive purchase in the field, however, and this James Tate trained £33.6k son of Helmet out of a Listed-placed mare makes plenty of appeal being a 1/2 brother to promising 2015 juvenile Lytham St Annes. Completing the Tricast is the 2nd most expensive purchase by a FSS in the race, a £36.75k son of Sir Prancealot in training with Richard Hughes, who despite being a fairly late foal (April 16th) is also out of a Listed-placed mare & is a 1/2 brother to the John Best trained Mullionheir who has an OR of 94.
One other entry of interest is the Gay Kelleway trained Sayif colt King Of Castilla who is scheduled to make his debut at Saint-Cloud on Thursday. His Juddmonte bred dam was a 5f 2yo winner & his 1/2 sister Dijarvo won over 5f on debut before winning a French Listed juvenile race, but having been purchased for just £9,975 he would qualify for the maximum weight allowance of 6lbs.
