2016 2YO Sales Races part 3

Tattersalls October Auction Stakes

This race takes place at the beginning of October and is run over 6 furlongs. It is open to horses sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the previous year but limited to those lots catalogued in Books 3 & 4 which is inevitably the cheaper end of the market, with weight allowances of up to 6lbs for those horses purchased for less than 15k guineas.

2016 2YO Sales Races part 2

Part 2 of what will now be a 5 part blog following the recent publication of the declarations for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury & the Weatherbys Hamilton 2YO Stakes at Doncaster.

Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale Stakes

This race takes place in September over 6 furlongs at the Curragh for horses that were sold at the Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale the previous September. Unusually for an Irish juvenile race there are usually plenty of entries from British trainers, who were responsible for half the field in last year's renewal & more than half of the initial entries for 2016.

The race conditions provide allowances of 2lbs for horses costing less than €45k, 4lbs for those costing < €30k & 6lbs for those who were sold for < €15k with penalties of 2lbs for previous winners & 5lbs for Group/Listed Winners.

Last year's renewal resulted in a 1-2 for Qatar Racing with the Ger Lyons trained filly Glass House (12/1) narrowly defeating the David Brown trained filly War Queen (10/1) and while this may not sound the ideal result for a sales race designed to give smaller owners a chance at winning a big pot, neither filly was ridiculously expensive, with the winner even receiving an allowance of 2lbs on account of being sold for just €35k. The runner-up was purchased for €67k making her the 3rd most expensive runner in the final field of 30 behind the 4th placed colt Viren's Army (5/1) who was sold for €115k & the unplaced Caribbean Spring (33/1) who cost €110k.

British trainer David Evans, who ran 4 juveniles in the race, was responsible for the surprise 3rd in Zeeoneandonly (50/1) who picked up €30k in prize-money having been purchased for just €24k as a yearling. This also meant that GB-based trainers provided the 2nd, 3rd & 4th placed horses from their 16 entries, which included 4 from Richard Fahey & 3 from the stable of Mark Johnston.

Leading Irish trainers Jim Bolger & Jessica Harrington each provided 2 runners as did Ger Lyons, who alongside the winner also fielded one of the 2 unplaced 100/30 joint-favourites in Reckless Endeavour, who came into the race with an OR of 98. The other joint-fav, Miss Elizabeth trained by Eddie Lynam, was theoretically the best treated horse in the field with an OR of 99 & allowances of 5lbs for being a filly & 6lbs for her €7.5k purchase price (partly negated by a 2lbs winner's penalty).

The representatives of FSS in the race didn't fare particularly well however, with Miss Phillyjinks (Zoffany) finishing 17th at 50/1 & Becca Campbell (Roderic O'Connor) finishing 27th at 66/1, but they make up nearly 1/4 of the initial entries for the 2016 renewal so I'm quietly confident of a better showing this time around...

Top of the list is a €120k son of Harbour Watch named Harbour Force who is in training with Joseph Tuite; the 1st foal out of a Kevin Ryan trained mare who made a winning debut & then ran with credit in 2 juvenile pattern races over in IRE. The 2nd most expensive horse entered in the race is a €90k Sepoy 1/2 sister to Roossey, who won a Maiden at the 3rd attempt for William Haggas as well as a Nursery off an OR of 84 two seasons ago. Two other expensive purchases to note are a €68k daughter of Requinto that is entered in the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up sale & a €72k Sir Prancealot 1/2 sister to useful Sir Mark Prescott juvenile Liber. Trained by Eddie Lynam, she is one of nine entries in the race by the sire.

Last year's winning owners are represented by a €40k Harbour Watch filly; trained by Ralph Beckett, she is the 1st foal out of an unraced Newsells Park Stud mare & closely related to Equiano; whilst last years winning trainer, Ger Lyons, has a €31k Casamento filly entered for this year's renewal. None of Mark Johnston's entries are by FSS but Richard Fahey does have a €35k daughter of Elzaam entered for the race. Of more interest, though, is the Elzaam 1/2 sister to Madrinho, who was Listed-placed as a juvenile last year. In training with David O'Meara, she was an €11k vendor buy-back, meaning that she would be receiving the maximum allowance of 11bs should she line up. Another cheap purchase of interest is one of the 3 David Evans trained representatives of Sir Prancealot in the field, purchased for just €10.5k this May foal is a 1/2 sister to Carcinetto, who was multiple Listed-placed for the trainer, though not as a juvenile.

Completing the shortlist, however, is Brian Ellison's Helmet colt Orewa, an early February foal out of the Group 3 winning Aidan O'Brien trained Sadler's Wells mare Lucky. Whilst the dam has produced nothing of note to date, the modest purchase price of €18k would translate into a useful 4lbs allowance for this colt.
